Shellberg’s Runner‑Up Finish Leads Hawkeyes at Calusa Cup

The Iowa men’s golf team concluded the Calusa Cup on Tuesday, with Ryan Shellberg earning runner‑up honors.

NAPLES, Fla. – The University of Iowa men’s golf team rounded out the third round of the Calusa Cup on Tuesday. Sophomore Ryan Shellberg earned runner‑up honors, while the Hawkeyes shot five‑over par in the final round and finished the tournament three‑over to place sixth overall.

"I’m really proud of Ryan. I’ve been saying he gets better every tournament and this week was no different. This was by far the most complete performance of his career. I know he’s going to gain a lot confidence from this week," said head coach Tyler Stith.

Shellberg led Iowa with a three‑under‑par final round, recording three birdies and shooting 17 of 18 holes at par or better. Overall, he played 47 of 54 holes at par or better during the tournament. His career-best 208 total score marks the best 54‑hole performance by a Hawkeye at the Calusa Cup and ranks tied for 28th all‑time in program history.

Redshirt freshman Jack McCarty followed with an even‑par round, carding a 72 and posting five birdies on the day, to finish the tournament at eight-over par.

Junior Max Tjoa recorded his fourth top‑25 finish of the season, shooting two‑under through the front nine and finishing the tournament four‑over par to place 23rd.

Redshirt freshman Grant Gudgel wrapped up his Calusa Cup debut tied for 27th with a total score of six‑over par, while freshman Bennett Warren rounded out the Hawkeyes with a seven‑over‑par final round.

"We gained a spot as a team but we left far too many strokes out there. We didn’t take advantage of the par 5s on the back and didn’t make many putts.  We have a few weeks until our home event. We are going to focus on doing the simple things better and prepare to play our best," said Stith.

This marks the best team finish for Iowa at the Calusa Cup in program and tournament history.
