Hawkeyes Fall to No. 25 Nebraska, 15-11

The Iowa baseball team fell to No. 25 Nebraska, 15-11, on Saturday afternoon at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.

LINCOLN, Neb. — The University of Iowa baseball team fell to No. 25 Nebraska, 15-11, on Saturday afternoon at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.

“It was a painful loss but I’m proud of our guy’s effort,” said head coach Rick Heller. “Being down seven and fighting back to take the lead in the eighth was great to see. Our guys fought today. We had so many guys clutch up for us. Unfortunately, we weren’t our best on the mound and it cost us.”

Nebraska opened the scoring in the second inning and extended its lead with four runs in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 7-0 advantage.

Senior Maddux Frese made the start on the mound for Iowa and worked three innings, allowing five runs on six hits. He was relieved by Brady Ferguson in the fourth inning, as Nebraska added two runs during the frame.

Iowa used multiple pitchers out of the bullpen, including seniors Justin Hackett and Ganon Archer, graduate student Joe Husak, redshirt freshman Kyle Alivo and freshman Brolan Frost. Husak was charged with the loss after allowing four runs in 1 1/3 innings.

The Hawkeyes got on the board in the fifth inning when redshirt sophomore Jaixen Frost hit a solo home run to left-center. Iowa followed in the sixth inning with another solo shot, as senior Miles Risley homered to left field to cut the deficit to 7-2.

Iowa put together a four-run seventh inning to get back into the game. Senior Mathew Delgado singled, and Frost was hit by a pitch before senior Ben Swails drew a walk. Pinch hitter Mitch Wood delivered a single through the left side, scoring Frost and Delgado. Senior Gable Mitchell followed with an RBI single to left-center to bring home Swails, and pinch runner Jaylen Ziegler later scored on a passed ball to make it a one-run game.

Nebraska added a run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Hawkeyes took the lead with a five-run eighth inning. Swails hit a two-run home run to center field to tie the game before senior Kooper Schulte followed with an RBI single. Risley doubled to left field to drive in Schulte, and senior Caleb Wulf capped the rally with a bunt single to score Mitchell, giving Iowa an 11-8 advantage.

Nebraska responded with seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to retake the lead.
