IOWA CITY, Iowa – Clare Schaefer will join the University of Iowa tennis program as a walk-on in the fall, the announcement was made Friday by head coach Sasha Boros.
“We are thrilled to welcome Clare to our team and have her join this exciting incoming class in August,” said Boros. “Her enthusiasm for the Hawkeyes is contagious, and we love the energy, work ethic and determination she will bring to our program. Clare is eager to grow both on the court and in the classroom, and we are excited to support her journey as a student-athlete at the University of Iowa.”
The Whitefish Bay, Wis., native won the 2025 Wisconsin D1 singles state championship, and finished as a four-year letterwinner and academic Merit Award recipient at Whitefish Bay High School.
In addition, Schaefer represents Paley Tennis Center (Glendale, Wisc.) in competition. Her sister, Carolyn, is a rising junior on Georgetown (Washington D.C.) University’s women’s tennis team.
“I chose the University of Iowa because it offers the perfect combination of high-level tennis, outstanding academics and a team culture that felt like home,” Schaefer said. “I love the opportunity to compete in the Big Ten and pursue a high-quality education while growing as both a student and an athlete. The coaches, program and people made Iowa the perfect fit for me.”
Schaefer is the fifth player joining the program for the 2026-27 season, along with incoming freshmen Mia Soso (Chicago, Ill), Emerey Gross (St. Louis, Mo.) and Macey Howes (Iowa City, Iowa) and Purdue transfer Ida Clement.
