Johnson Named CSC First-Team Academic All-American

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa junior Ryan Johnson was named first-team Academic All-America, as selected by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) on Tuesday.

Johnson was one of 16 men’s track and field athletes nationwide to be selected to the first team. A junior studying mechanical engineering, Johnson boasted a 3.77 GPA during the 2025-26 academic year.

He is Iowa’s 10th recipient of a national academic award and first since 2024 when first-teamer Austin West and third-team selection Mariel Bruxvoort were honored.

The Springboro, Ohio, native completed a remarkable season as the men’s weight throw national champion, marking the program’s first of its kind. He also won the Big Ten title in the event and finished the indoor season undefeated.

Johnson was stellar during outdoor season as well, finishing third and as a first-team All-American in the hammer throw at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He was also the Big Ten’s runner-up in the hammer throw at the conference meet.

In his second season as a Hawkeye, Johnson updated school records in the weight and hammer throws. His list of accolades is lengthy, taking home honors as the USTFCCCA Midwest Region and Big Ten Men’s Field Athletes of the Year, as well as the indoor Big Ten’s Men’s Field Athlete of the Championships. Additionally, he earned the USTFCCCA’s Men’s National Athlete of the Week once and was a four-time recipient of the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week award.
