Casey Day Named Pitching Coach

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Former Hawkeye pitcher Casey Day has been named pitching coach for the University of Iowa baseball team, head coach Rick Heller announced Wednesday.

“We’re excited to have Casey join our coaching staff,” Heller said. “He’s a hard-working, intelligent, and talented pitching coach. As a former player in our program, Casey understands the standards and expectations for our pitching development. We are glad to have him back in Hawkeye uniform. Casey will do a great job.”

Day returns to Iowa City following player development roles in professional baseball, most recently serving in pitching coordination with the Detroit Tigers organization. Prior to his tenure with Detroit, Day coached in the Baltimore Orioles system, serving as a development coach in the Florida Complex League in 2024 before being promoted to pitching coach for the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds for the 2025 season.

Under Day's guidance in 2025, Delmarva led the Carolina League with 1,299 strikeouts while recording a 4.32 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP, and a .224 batting average against.

Before transitioning to Major League Baseball organizations, Day began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at Kirkwood Community College during the 2023 season. That year, Kirkwood won 38 games and registered a 5.17 ERA while striking out 444 batters against 214 walks, posting a 9.64 K/9 and 1.62 WHIP.

As a player, Day pitched at Kirkwood, Wichita State, and Iowa. During his lone season on the mound for the Hawkeyes in 2022, he posted a 3.18 ERA over eight relief appearances before graduating with a degree in sport and recreation management.
