Jared Simpson Gets Called Up to Washington Nationals

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Former University of Iowa left-handed pitcher Jared Simpson has been called up to the Washington Nationals.  

The Clinton, Iowa, native has posted a 1-6 record and a 3.85 ERA in the minors. He has thrown 124 innings, striking out 156 and allowing a 1.49 WHIP. He has three saves and has allowed a .191 batting average against.

Simpson played for the Hawkeyes from 2022–23. He had a 4-3 record in 22 appearances in 2023 while tallying 64 strikeouts in 42 2/3 innings. He made 13 appearances in 2022, striking out 23.

A transfer from Missouri and Iowa Western CC, Simpson made 41 career appearances and had a 4-4 record with 93 strikeouts.

He was selected as the 225th pick in the 8th round of the 2023 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals.

Simpson is the seventh player in Heller’s Iowa tenure to get the call to the Majors, joining Nick Allgeyer, Mason McCoy, Tyler Cropley, Adam Mazur, Jack Dreyer and Duncan Davitt. He is the 12th player to reach MLB who played under Heller, joining Sean Manaea, Dakota Bacus, Colin Rea, Jake Petricka and Ryan Strausborger — all of whom played for Heller at Indiana State.
