C.J. Beathard To Serve As Honorary Captain

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Former University of Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard will serve as honorary captain on Saturday when the 21st-ranked Hawkeyes host Iowa State at a sold-out Kinnick Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. (CT) on NBC.

Beathard was a four-year letterwinner from 2013 to 2016, compiling a 21-7 record as a starter and serving as a key leader during one of the most successful eras in program history. A two-time permanent team captain (2015, 2016), Beathard is the only quarterback in school history to win his first 13 career starts under center.

After taking over full-time starting duties as a junior, the Franklin, Tennessee, native spearheaded Iowa’s historic 2015 season. He led the Hawkeyes to their first 12-0 regular-season record in school history, securing a Big Ten West title, a berth in the Big Ten Championship Game, and an appearance in the 2016 Rose Bowl.

Recognized as a Manning Award finalist and Second-Team All-Big Ten selection in 2015, Beathard finished his Hawkeye career with 5,562 passing yards, 40 passing touchdowns, and 10 rushing touchdowns. His 40 passing scores rank seventh in program history.

Following his collegiate career, Beathard was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round (104th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft. Over a multi-year professional career with the 49ers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Detroit Lions, he has accumulated 3,886 passing yards, 19 passing touchdowns, and four rushing touchdowns across 32 NFL appearances.

Beathard will accompany the Iowa captains to midfield for Saturday’s pregame coin toss and will be with the team in the locker room before and after the game.
