Johannsen, Hawkeyes Lead Inverness Intercollegiate

TOLEDO, Ohio — First-year Andrew Johannsen carded a three-under-par 68 to lead the University of Iowa men’s golf team and the tournament field during the opening round of the Inverness Collegiate on Sunday at the Inverness Club.

The Hawkeyes fired a one-under par 283 as a team as they were the only team in the field under par through 18 holes. Virginia, Tennessee, and host Toledo are tied in second place, eight strokes behind Iowa.

“That was a solid round, I’m happy with our performance,” said Iowa head coach Tyler Stith. “This golf course tests you on every shot and the team executed well.”

Johannsen is currently atop the leaderboard after recording five birdies throughout the opening round. He was two-under through the front nine and four-under through 14 holes, continuing his momentum from Wednesday’s ANF Fall Classic, where he tied for fourth at seven-under-par.

“Andrew was locked in out there today,” said Stith. “He drove the ball great and played with a lot of patience. As a group we began the day with a good mindset and did a good job of playing disciplined.”

Fourth-year Maxwell Tjoa was the second Hawkeye under par, opening the tournament with a one-under par 70, putting him in a tie for third place. 

Second-year Bennett Warren sits at one-over-par (73) and in a tie for 12th place, using back-to-back birdies on holes 10 and 11 to recover from a three-over start. Third-year Grant Gudgel is tied for 24th with a two-over par 73, while Ryan Shellberg is tied for 68th with a 76.
