Mike Elgin To Serve As Honorary Captain

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Former University of Iowa offensive lineman Mike Elgin will serve as honorary captain on Saturday when the 18th-ranked Hawkeyes host UNI at a sold-out Kinnick Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. (CT) on FS1.

Elgin enjoyed a stellar collegiate career as a Hawkeye, starting every game along the offensive line during his final three seasons. An honorable mention All-Big Ten selection and permanent team captain in 2006, he started all 12 games as a senior, earned the 2006 Alamo Bowl Sportsmanship Award, and participated in the Hula Bowl.

In 2004, Elgin helped lead Iowa to a 10-win season, a Big Ten Championship, and a dramatic 30-25 victory over LSU on the final play of the Capital One Bowl. He also guided the Hawkeyes to postseason appearances in the Outback Bowl and Alamo Bowl during his junior and senior campaigns, respectively.

A native of Bankston, Iowa, Elgin excelled equally in the classroom. He was named a first-team Academic All-American in both 2005 and 2006. As a senior, Elgin was a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy—college football’s premier academic award—and received Iowa’s Forest Evashevski Scholastic Achievement Award. He was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a 2004 Academic All-District selection.

Following his collegiate career, Elgin was selected by the New England Patriots in the seventh round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He spent two seasons in the NFL with New England (2007) and the Indianapolis Colts (2008).

Elgin will accompany the Iowa captains to midfield for Saturday’s pregame coin toss and will be with the team in the locker room before and after the game.
