No. 18 Hawkeyes Overwhelm UNI, 55-0

The 18th-ranked Iowa football team closed out nonconference play with a dominating 55-0 victory over Northern Iowa on Saturday inside Kinnick Stadium.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No.18-ranked University of Iowa football team closed out nonconference play with a dominating 55-0 victory over Northern Iowa on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.

The Hawkeyes racked 640 yards of total offense and 32 first downs, while holding the Panthers to 155 yards and nine first downs.

Fourth-year quarterback Hank Brown paced Iowa through the air, completing all 12 of his attempts for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Third-year Jeremy Hecklinski was 6-of-11 for 65 yards.

Iowa’s rushing attack featured three 100-yard rushers, totaling 422 yards on the ground -- a total that ranks seventh all-time in program history. Third-year Xavier Williams led the way with 151 yards and three touchdowns on six carries. Second-year Braeden Jackson had 125 yards and a touchdown and second-year Nathan McNeil rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Second-year O’Lante Dean also contributed 46 rushing yards.

McNeil and second-year Evan James led the Hawkeyes in receiving. McNeil recorded three receptions for 37 yards, while James hauled in three passes for 35 yards.

Defensively, third-year Cam Buffington led Iowa with six total tackles, including two tackles for loss. Second-year Jacob Wallace and third-year Rashad Godfrey, Jr., each recorded their first career interceptions.

QUOTING KIRK FERENTZ

"I’m happy with our team's efforts this week and their focus, and that started last Sunday. They handled that well, they've really done a good job preparing, so I’m happy about that. Hank had a really good game. It’s tough to do much better than what he did. All three running backs, with Kamari out, all three of those guys stepped up and did well. It was good to see because they're all young players that we haven't seen a lot on the game field or enough on the game field. Xavier's been a little bit injured, so it was good to see him look like his old self again, too, so that's positive. That doesn't happen without the line doing a good job, tight ends doing a good job, and our receivers—you may or may not notice, but they're doing a good job getting in there and being effective. That's how big plays happen, and I’m happy about that.

In the second half, it's excellent to get a lot of guys out there playing on the field. There’s certainly some penalty situations we're going to have to get cleaned up. You can't have those kinds of penalties; we had a bunch of them. So, that's something we'll have to work on.

Overall, we're at the quarter-mark now. I keep talking to our guys about how fast it goes once you get into the season—it goes really quickly. Our nonconference portion of the schedule is over so it’s now a bigger picture. I’m pleased with the way the guys were in camp and then certainly pleased with the way they've operated the last three weeks. Now the whole idea is for us to keep growing, hopefully we're learning. I think they are, but just learning every day and giving ourselves a chance to have success as we move forward here.

The bottom line is, they're playing with good effort and playing team football, which gives you an opportunity. I’m just happy with the start, and I think everybody's aware we have a lot of work to do. We'll reinforce that tomorrow, and they'll see that on film. But that's exciting. That's what the season's all about. So, just happy with the start."

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Iowa struck in the opening drive with a 2-yard rushing touchdown by Nathan McNeil with 11:11 left in the first quarter. The drive covered 75 yards in eight plays.
  • On the next drive, Hank Brown connected with Braeden Jackson on a 24-yard touchdown pass to increase the lead to 14-0 with 5:48 left in the first quarter.
  • Xavier Williams broke free for a 48-yard touchdown run with 24 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
  • Following an interception by Jacob Wallace at the UNI 37-yard line, the Hawkeyes capitalized as Hank Brown found Addison Ostrenga for a 14-yard passing touchdown, making it 28-0.
  • Williams logged his second rushing touchdown of the game on a 16-yard run, giving Iowa a 35-point lead at the 10:13 mark in the second quarter. quarter.

  • The Hawkeyes are 3-0 for the first time since the 2023 season and for the 11th time under head coach Kirk Ferentz.
  • Iowa notched its second shutout of the season and the 20th shutout of the Ferentz era.
    • It is the first time since the 2022 season that the team has had multiple shutouts in a single season.
  • The Hawkeyes rushed for 422 yards (seventh-most in program history) and had 640 yards (the second-most in a game under Ferentz and the most since 2019 vs. Middle Tennessee State (644).)
    • The 422 yards are the most rushing yards under Ferentz.
  • The 55-point margin of victory is the largest for the team since 2018 (63-0) at Illinois.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES

  • QB Hank Brown completed 12-of-12 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns – a 24-yarder to Braeden Jackson in the first quarter and a 14-yarder to Addison Ostrenga in the second.
    • Brown is the second Iowa quarterback to finish with a perfect completion percentage, joining Brad Banks, who was 10-for-10 for 197 yards against Northwestern in 2002.
    • Brown is the first Iowa quarterback to complete his first 12 passes in a game since C.J. Beathard had 15 straight completions to start the game against North Texas on Sept. 26, 2015.
  • Iowa had three running backs go over the 100-yard mark in the game for the first time since 1983 (Phillips 172, Gill 104, Granger 128).
  • RB Xavier Williams notched his second career 100-yard game, finishing with a career-high 151 yards on six attempts (25.2 average) with three touchdowns. He had a career-long 48-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, a 16-yarder in the second and a 37-yarder in the third.
    • Williams needed only four carries to reach the 100-yard mark.
    • He is the first player to have three rushing touchdowns in a game since Mark Gronowski at Rutgers in 2025.
  • RB Nathan McNeil recorded his first career 100-yard game, finishing with 111 yards on 12 attempts with two touchdowns – a 2-yard score in the first and a 12-yarder in the second.
    • The two touchdowns were the first two scores of his collegiate career.
    • He also had three receptions for 37 yards.
  • RB Braeden Jackson had 11 carries for 125 yards with one touchdown – a career-long 62-yarder in the fourth quarter. It was the longest rush by a Hawkeye this season.
    • Jackson also had a 24-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter for his first career catch and TD.
  • TE Addison Ostrenga had a 14-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter. It was his fourth career touchdown (first since the 2024 season).
  • LB Cam Buffington finished with six tackles and two TFL. He has led the team in tackles in each of the three contests.

  • Iowa’s offense scored a touchdown on its first five possessions of the game.
    • The last time Iowa scored a touchdown on its first five possessions was in the 2019 Holiday Bowl victory over USC.
  • Iowa’s quarterbacks completed its first 16 passes for 190 yards to open the game.
  • The Hawkeyes had 418 yards of total offense (217 on the ground/201 through the air) with 24 first downs in the first half.
    • It is believed to be the first time Iowa has had 400+ yards in the first half since 1995 vs. New Mexico State (401 yards).
  • Iowa scored 42 points in the first half against UNI – a first for the program since 2005 (49 points vs. Ball State)
    • The last time Iowa scored 42 points any either half was in the second half at Nebraska in 2017.
