Hawkeyes Play Illinois to Scoreless Draw

The University of Iowa women’s soccer team played Illinois to a scoreless draw Friday evening at the Iowa Soccer Complex.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team played Illinois to a scoreless draw Friday evening at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
With the draw, Iowa moved to 5-2-3 overall and 0-1-2 in Big Ten play, while Illinois moved to 3-1-5 overall and 0-1-2 in conference play.
“It was similar to the last game in terms of fight, grit and determination,” Iowa head coach Dean Ward said. “I think we created some good chances, but we didn’t take them. We’re disappointed that we didn’t win but I can’t fault the team for their effort.”
Iowa held 55 percent of possession and outshot Illinois 13-8. The Hawkeyes also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Hawkeyes generated eight shots on goal but were unable to break through, as Fighting Illini goalkeeper Izzy Lee finished with eight saves. Sofia Bush paced Iowa with three shots on goal.
Goalkeeper Braelynn Galt recorded two saves for Iowa. The Hawkeye defense held Illinois without a shot on goal after the 58th minute.

  • Bush’s three shots on goal marked a season high. 
  • Iowa has outshot opponents 214-73 this season. 
  • Lexy Griffin and Josie Jones each played the full 90 minutes for the first time this season, bringing Iowa’s total to 10 position players who have gone the distance in a match. 
  • Sara Batchadji played the full 90 minutes for the sixth time this season. 
  • The match marked the first starts of the season for Griffin and Berkley Binggeli. 
  • Iowa recorded its sixth shutout of the season and second consecutive clean sheet.
