Van Aalsum Seals Shootout Victory as Iowa Tops Indiana, 2-1

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa field hockey team outlasted Indiana in a dramatic 2-1 shootout victory in a nonconference contest Sunday afternoon at Grant Field.

"It was an awesome response from the team.  That’s a really good team and they're going to make some noise in the Big Ten and nationally. So, unbelievable resilience from the Hawks to have a completely different performance from Friday. Had we done that Friday, it probably would have been a different story, but you live and you learn, right? So, proud of them," said head coach Lisa Cellucci.

After three scoreless quarters, Iowa broke the deadlock at 53:25 in the fourth period when Tea Fortpied scored off a penalty corner with assists from Rachel Herbine and Amber Millard-Smith.

Indiana pulled its goalkeeper late in regulation and capitalized at 57:56, as Theresa Ricci netted the equalizer off a pass from Molly Stutte to force overtime.

Following a scoreless overtime period, the contest moved to a penalty shootout.

Iowa jumped out to an early 3-0 shootout lead with successful attempts from Myra van de Kop, Fréderique van Cleef and Dionne van Aalsum.

Indiana answered with three straight conversions to tie the shootout at 3-3.

In sudden death, goalkeeper Abby Johnson made a key stop against Indiana’s Mijntje Hagen, setting up van Aalsum to convert her second shootout attempt and seal the 4-3 shootout victory.

Julia Claessens played all 90 minutes of regulation and overtime for the Hawkeyes, making two saves, while Johnson entered for the shootout to secure the win.

OF NOTE
- Abby Johnson improved to 7-1 in goal this season.
- This was Iowa's first shootout of the season.
