Hawkeyes Draw 1-1 at Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team recorded a 1-1 draw against Penn State on Thursday evening at Jeffrey Field.

With the draw, Iowa moved to 5-2-4 overall and 0-1-3 in Big Ten play, while Penn State moved to 4-2-3 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play.

Penn State struck first in the fifth minute, as Aubrey Kulpa found the back of the net to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead.

Penn State held a 9-2 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks during the opening 45 minutes. Goalkeeper Braelynn Galt kept the deficit at one with five first-half saves.

Sara Batchadji leveled the match in the 71st minute, sending a long-range effort over the Penn State goalkeeper and into the back of the net to make it 1-1. Berit Parten was credited with the assist.

Neither side was able to break through after the equalizer, resulting in a 1-1 final.

Iowa held a 10-6 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks in the second half. Batchadji led the Hawkeyes with three shots, including two on goal.

• Batchadji’s goal was her second of the season.
• Parten’s assist was her sixth of the season.
• Parten has recorded at least one point in every match in which Iowa has scored this season.
• Galt recorded seven saves for the second time this season.
• The Hawkeyes welcomed back Léa Larouche, Iba Oching and Lianna Tarasco to the lineup for the first time since Aug. 20 after representing Canada at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
• Larouche made her first start as a Hawkeye.
• Iowa recorded its third consecutive draw for the first time since 2012, when the Hawkeyes tied Michigan, Michigan State and Minnesota in three straight Big Ten matches.
• Oching became the 11th Hawkeye this season to play the full 90 minutes. Batchadji and Millie Greer also went the distance.
