No. 5 Hawkeyes Fight Back to Beat Buckeyes, 3-2

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The fifth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team overcame a 2-1 halftime deficit to defeat Ohio State, 3-2, in a nonconference contest on Sunday afternoon at Grant Field.

Dionne van Aalsum put the Hawkeyes on the board early at the 5:17 mark of the first quarter, converting off an assist from Lieve van Kessel for her 11th goal of the season. The score moved van Aalsum into a tie for third place on Iowa's career goals list.

Ohio State (4-6, 0-1) responded in the second quarter with back-to-back unassisted goals from Phillippa Jowett at 15:18 and Lea DeWan at 19:17 to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Iowa (10-1, 1-1) answered in the third quarter when Reine van Hoof netted an unassisted equalizer at the 35:58 mark for her fourth goal of the season.

In the fourth quarter, Fréderique van Cleef delivered the game-winner unassisted at 49:53. Her 14th goal of the season capped the comeback victory for the Hawkeyes.

Ohio State outshot Iowa, 19-13, but first-year goalkeeper Julia Claessens anchored the Hawkeye defense with a career-high nine saves to earn the victory.
