Van Cleef and Claessens Earn Big Ten Weekly Honors

A pair of University of Iowa student-athletes earned Big Ten weekly honors, the conference announced Tuesday. Fifth-year Fréderique van Cleef secured her third Offensive Player of the Week honor of the season and career, while first-year Julia Claessens was named Freshman of the Week for the first time in her career.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — A pair of University of Iowa student-athletes earned Big Ten weekly honors, the conference announced Tuesday. Fifth-year Fréderique van Cleef secured her third Offensive Player of the Week honor of the season and career, while first-year Julia Claessens was named Freshman of the Week for the first time in her career.

Van Cleef totaled three goals and an assist for seven points in Iowa's pair of victories over Ohio State. The Asten, Netherlands, native recorded the game-winning goal in the second contest while posting an impressive .500 shooting percentage.

Van Cleef has opened the season in dominant fashion, leading the Hawkeyes with 14 goals and six assists through 10 games while recording a .763 shots-on-goal percentage. She currently leads the nation in goals per game (1.40) and points per game (3.40).

Claessens anchored the Hawkeye defense with 13 saves and three goals allowed during the two contests. The 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, native notched a career-high nine saves to earn the victory in game two and is now 2-0 in goal for the Hawkeyes.

The fifth-ranked Hawkeyes return to action Friday, Oct. 2, against Michigan at 5 p.m. (CT) in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The game will be streamed on B1G+.
