Hawkeyes Conclude ITA Regional Championships

Memphis, Tenn. – The University of Iowa Women’s Tennis team concluded competition at the ITA Regional Championships on Saturday, winning five matches between singles and doubles action.

In singles main draw action, Emma Tothová cruised past Kansas State’s Sabrina Balderrama winning 6-3, 6-2. Tothová went on to face Oklahoma’s Laura Brunkel in the Round of 16 but fell 6-3, 6-3.

Mia Soso played in a consolation match against Wichita State’s Alina Vysochenko where she forced a three-set tiebreaker winning 0-6, 6-4, [10]-[5]. Emerey Gross also competed in a consolation match as well where she faced Iowa State’s Maria de la Paz Alberto, but fell in a close two set match 6-3, 7(11)-6(9).

Ida Clement, Clare Schaefer, and Sally Xu rounded out the day in extra singles matches. Clement had a strong 6-3, 6-3 win against Tulsa’s Alice Baba while Schaefer battled hard against Kansas’s Meg McCarty but fell 6-4, 6-0. Xu had a commanding win against Kansas State’s Lena Beuing 6-3, 6-0.

In doubles consolation round Soso and Gross took on Minnesota’s Ksenia Hanke and Mia Liepert and won a close match 8-6.

The Hawkeyes return to action next week at the Rome Collegiate Invitational in Rome, Georgia, from Oct. 23-25.
