Hawkeyes Complete Day 1 at Hoosier Invitational

The University of Iowa Women’s Tennis team opened competition at the Hoosier Invitational on Friday, posting two victories in singles play.

Bloomington, Ind. – The University of Iowa Women’s Tennis team opened competition at the Hoosier Invitational on Friday, posting two victories in singles play.

In singles actions, all five Hawkeyes took on opponents from Louisville, Notre Dame, and Miami (OH). Third-year Ida Clement opened play against Louisville’s Berta Miret but fell 6-1, 4-6, 6-0. Emma Tothová won two hard-fought sets to Notre Dame’s Jessica Kovalcik 7-6 (2), 7-5, while Sally Xu dropped a tough-three set match to Notre Dame’s Lily Rochon 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Emerey Gross put up a strong fight before falling to Louisville’s Samaya Smith 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (6), and Clare Schaefer recorded her first win as a Hawkeye, defeating Miami’s Avery Voss 6-2, 6-4.

The Hawkeyes will continue play at the Hoosier Invitational on Saturday.

The doubles portion of the tournament was postponed due to inclement weather and will begin on Saturday.
