EAST LANSING, Mich. — The sixth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team rallied with two fourth-quarter goals to earn a 4-3 victory over Michigan State on Sunday afternoon at Ralph Young Field. The comeback was fueled by late goals from Amber Millard-Smith and Dionne van Aalsum.
Fréderique van Cleef opened the scoring for Iowa (11-1, 3-1) early in the first quarter, scoring unassisted at the 4:10 mark for her 16th goal of the season. Van Aalsum extended the Hawkeyes' lead to 2-0 at 27:52 with an unassisted tally in the second quarter for her 13th goal of the season.
Michigan State (4-7, 0-4) cut into the margin before halftime when Aiden Weinmann scored off an assist from Lilian Knorr at 29:23.
The Spartans made their push in the second half, leveling the match at 42:33 in the third quarter on a goal by Knorr assisted by Mora Cavazza. Ellie Kendall then scored off an assist from Carmen Maudlin at 49:00 in the fourth quarter to give Michigan State a 3-2 lead.
Iowa responded down the stretch with back-to-back goals to reclaim the lead. Amber Millard-Smith netted the equalizer unassisted at 52:26 for the first goal of her career.
Van Aalsum delivered her second goal of the match and the game-winner at 55:31 off an assist from Rachel Herbine to notch her 14th goal of the season.
The Hawkeyes outshot Michigan State, 19-11, while goalkeeper Julia Claessens earned the victory in goal with four saves.
