Iowa travels to Michigan and Michigan State over the weekend. The Hawkeyes take on the Wolverines on Friday at 6 p.m. (CT) in Ann Arbor before heading to East Lansing for a Sunday match at noon with Michigan State.

- Rosa Vesty had a career-high 19 kills in Iowa's five-set match at Maryland.
- The Hawkeyes average 13.87 kills/set, which is third in the Big Ten. Iowa's .274 hitting percentage is sixth in the league.
- Setter Jenna Meitzler leads the nation in assists (736) and is third in the Big Ten in assists/set (10.82).
- Iowa's 12-4 start matches the program's best since 2016.
- The Hawkeyes recorded 18.5 blocks against Milwaukee. That is the second-most blocks by a Big Ten team this season.
- Iowa is one of two Big Ten programs to be led in kills by both of its middle hitters. Liv Mogridge ranks first in the Big Ten among middles in total kills.
- Iowa completed the season sweep of in-state rivals, taking care of Drake in straight sets on Sept. 16. The Hawkeyes hit a season-high .367 against the Bulldogs.
- The Hawkeyes swept Iowa State on Sept. 8 and won in Ames for the first time since 1997.
- Head Coach Jim Barnes won the 500th match of his coaching career in Iowa's victory over UAlbany.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN
- The Wolverines are 10-5 and 1-3 in the Big Ten. Michigan beat USC and has lost to UCLA, Washington and Penn State.
- Michigan was picked to finish 11th in the 2026 Big Ten Volleyball Preseason Poll.
- Junior outside hitter Ella Demetrician leads the Big Ten with 229 kills.
- Morgan Burke and Camille Edwards handle the setting duties for Michigan. Burke averages 6.94 assists per set with 368 total on the season, while Edwards averages 4.71 per set and has 231 total assists.
- As a team, Michigan leads the Big Ten with 13.49 assists per set.
- Libero Meredith Martin leads a back row that averages 14.77 digs per set with her 235 total digs this season.
- Middle blocker Ece Senyapici leads Michigan with 54 blocks.
- The Wolverines hit .269 and hold their opponents to .198.
SCOUTING #22 MICHIGAN STATE
- Michigan State enters the weekend 13-1. The Spartans are 3-1 in the Big Ten with a win over #14 Penn State and road victories over UCLA and USC. Michigan State's lone defeat is to Washington. The Spartans host Oregon on Friday.
- For the second consecutive season, Michigan State finished nonconference action undefeated. It marks the first time in program history going undefeated in nonconference play in back-to-back seasons.
- Driving the Spartan offense is senior outside hitter Alanna Bankston with 150 kills.
- Carmen Waye is second in the Big Ten with a .462 hitting percentage.
- Leading the team in both assists and service aces is setter Malaya Long with 479 assists and 22 service aces.
- Carmen Waye and Zora Hardison are dominant at the net for Michigan State, recording 57 and 52 blocks, respectively.
- As a team, the Spartans hit at a .308 clip while limiting opponents to .141. Both rank Michigan State second in the league.
WARS WITH WOLVERINES AND SPARTANS
Iowa has gone five sets with Michigan and Michigan State four times in the last four years. In 2022, the Hawkeyes rounded out their season with thrilling five-set victories over the Wolverines and Spartans. Iowa completed a reverse sweep over Michigan before ending its season with a win over Michigan State in East Lansing. Last year, the Hawkeyes dropped both contests in Michigan in tight, competitive five setters. Iowa fell behind in both matches 2-0, before rallying to force deciding sets.
MIDDLE U
Iowa's middle hitters continue to lead the team's offense. Behind the arms of Liv Mogridge and Hannah Whittingstall, the Hawkeyes are one of two Big Ten programs to have their middles lead the team in kills. Mogridge has 180 kills in 17 matches and leads the Big Ten among middles. She averages a team-leading 2.81 kills per set. Mogridge is hitting .347 on a team-high 409 swings. Whittingstall, known for her effectiveness on the slide, is second on the team with 168 kills. She leads the team with a .388 hitting percentage on 363 attempts and averages 2.51 kills per set. The duo also leads the way in blocking. Whittingstall has 70 blocks. Mogridge has 66 blocks, including nine solo.
SET THE TONE
Jenna Meitzler is the nation's leader in assists (736) through 18 matches. She averages 10.82 assists per set, which is third in the league. Iowa is hitting .274 and averaging 13.87 kills per set – good for third in the league – with Meitzler orchestrating the offense. Meitzler helped Iowa hit at its highest percentage all season (.367) and her attackers were terminal on 53% of her attempts against Drake. Her season high in assists is 57, set against Mississippi State in September. Meitzler picked up her sixth double-double of the season in the five-set match with Maryland.
B1G TESTS AWAIT
Iowa’s road swing continues with matches at Michigan and Michigan State. Iowa has not won in Ann Arbor since 2000. The Hawkeyes head to newly-ranked Michigan State on Sunday. Following these matches, Iowa welcomes nationally-ranked Purdue and Wisconsin to Xtream Arena. The Hawkeyes will entertain USC (Oct. 22) and UCLA (Oct. 24) before another stretch of ranked matches begins with a trip to Washington on Oct. 30.
IN-STATE SWEEPS
Iowa won its in-state matches over Drake and Iowa State without dropping a set. The Hawkeyes handled Drake with a 25-21, 25-21, 25-17 victory. Iowa out-hit Drake .367-.229 and commanded the net with nine blocks to Drake’s three. The Hawkeyes' win over rival Iowa State on Sept. 8 was Iowa’s first win over the Cyclones since 2021. It was also the first over Iowa State in Ames since 1997. The Hawkeyes won the first two sets decisively 25-20 and 25-21 before holding off Iowa State’s charge in the third, 25-23. The Hawkeyes silenced a crowd of 4,665 fans and picked up their second true road victory of the season.
