IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa student-athletes Hank Brown and Fréderique van Cleef were named September Student-Athletes of the Month, the Iowa Student-Athlete Advisory Committee announced Thursday.
Brown, a fourth-year quarterback from Nashville, Tennessee, led the Iowa football team to a 4-0 record in September and a No. 14 national ranking. He completed 66 of 97 passes for 700 yards and five touchdowns while adding 30 rushing yards and a score in four games.
Brown delivered a career performance in Iowa’s 20-19 come-from-behind victory at No. 18 Michigan on Sept. 26, completing a career-high 21 of 35 passes for a season-high 227 yards and two touchdowns. On the final play of the game, the fourth-year threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Reece Vander Zee as time expired to give the Hawkeyes the victory.
The quarterback also tied a school record for single-game completion percentage in Iowa’s 55-0 shutout of Northern Iowa, completing all 12 of his passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Brown graduated in May 2026 with a bachelor’s degree in enterprise leadership. He regularly volunteers with Safe Haven Animal Shelter.
Van Cleef, a fifth-year forward from Asten, Netherlands, led the Hawkeyes field hockey team to a 6-1 record in September. She netted 12 goals and added five assists for 29 points during the month and scored the game-winning goal against Ohio State on Sept. 27.
Van Cleef helped the Hawkeyes earn ranked victories over No. 16 Miami (Ohio) and No. 14 Louisville. By the end of the month, she ranked first nationally in points per game (3.4) and goals per game (1.4). She also earned two Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors during September.
Van Cleef is pursuing a master's degree in clinical exercise physiology within the Department of Health and Human Physiology. She has volunteered with the United Way's Adopt a Family Holiday Gift Giving program.
