No. 6 Hawkeyes Fall to No. 1 Northwestern, 2-1

The No. 6 University of Iowa field hockey team fell short in a top-10 Big Ten battle, dropping a 2-1 decision to top-ranked Northwestern on Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

EVANSTON, Ill. — The No. 6 University of Iowa field hockey team fell short in a top-10 Big Ten battle, dropping a 2-1 decision to top-ranked Northwestern on Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

Northwestern (13-0, 4-0 Big Ten) opened the scoring late in the first quarter when Ashley Sessa tipped in an assist from Aerin Krys at the 13:35 mark to put the Wildcats ahead, 1-0.

Iowa (11-2, 3-2 Big Ten) responded early in the second quarter at 18:00 when Jordan Byers deflected a shot from Dionne van Aalsum into the back of the cage on a penalty corner to equalize the match, 1-1, entering halftime.

The Wildcats regained the lead late in the third quarter as Sessa converted a turnover-driven 2-on-1 opportunity off a pass from Olivia Bent-Cole at the 41:24 mark for her second goal of the day.

Northwestern held a 16-11 advantage in shots, while Iowa earned a 6-4 edge in penalty corners. Goalkeeper Julia Claessens recorded seven saves across nearly 56 minutes in goal for the Hawkeyes.

- Claessens is now 4-1 in goal for the Hawkeyes.
- Byers' goal was her first of the season.
