Broderick Binns was named director of player development in April, 2016. A four-year letterman for the Hawkeyes during his playing career, Binns served on the Iowa coaching staff as a graduate assistant coach in 2014 and 2015, assisting with Hawkeye special teams.

In addition to his duties with the Iowa football program, Binns also works closely with Athletics Student Services and the UI campus in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Iowa has won 47 games over the past five seasons, the highest total in school history over any five-year period, and a total that ranks ninth nationally. Iowa won its final four games in 2019 and ranked 15th in the nation in the final Associated Press and coaches polls.

The Hawkeyes concluded the 2019 campaign with a 10-3 record following a 49-24 win over No. 22 Southern California in the Holiday Bowl. The three losses were all to ranked opponents by a combined 14 points. The Hawkeyes were 4-1 in trophy games for the third straight season. Iowa has won three straight postseason games and 12 straight nonconference games.

Iowa completed the 2018 season with a 9-4 mark and a final ranking of 25th in the Associated Press national rankings. The Hawkeyes earned a 27-22 Outback Bowl win over No. 18 Mississippi State to close the season with three straight wins. The four losses came by a total of 23 points and all were decided in the final minutes of play. Iowa tied for second in the Big Ten West Division.

The Hawkeyes posted a perfect 12-0 regular season record in 2015, winning the West Division of the Big Ten Conference. Iowa participated in the 2016 Rose Bowl Game and the 2015 Big Ten Championship and ended the season in the top 10 in the final national rankings.

Along with winning its most recent three bowl games, Iowa also participated in the 2017 Outback Bowl, 2016 Rose Bowl Game, 2015 TaxSlayer Bowl and 2014 Outback Bowl. The Hawkeyes have ranked in the final top 10 of both major polls five times in the past 18 seasons.

Iowa has won 151 games over the past 18 seasons, including 90 Big Ten games. Along with the 2015 division title, the Hawkeyes earned a share of the Big Ten title in both 2002 and 2004 and tied for second in 2009. Iowa has finished in the Big Ten’s first division in 17 of the past 19 years.

Binns enjoyed a very successful playing career as a defensive end for the Hawkeyes from 2008-11. He earned second team All-Big Ten honors as a senior and earned the Roy J. Carver Most Valuable Player Award for defense. He was a three-year member of the Iowa Leadership Group during his career.

Iowa posted a 35-17 record from 2008-11, including a 3-1 record in bowl games. Iowa posted an 11-2 record in 2009, placing second in the Big Ten before defeating ACC champion Georgia Tech in the 2010 Orange Bowl. The Hawkeyes also defeated South Carolina in the 2009 Outback Bowl and Missouri in the 2010 Insight Bowl.

Binns started all 13 games as a senior, recording 32 solo tackles and 28 assists. He tied for the team lead with eight pass break-ups and was second in tackles for loss (12-58) and QB sacks (5-36). He ranked among Big Ten leaders in pass break-ups, QB sacks (.4) and tackles for loss.

He saw action in 12 games as a junior, with five starts. He recorded 17 solo tackles and 19 assists, along with an interception return for a touchdown at Arizona.

Binns started all 13 games in 2009 and was named honorable mention All-Big Ten by league media and earned the Coaches Appreciation Award for defense. He was named ESPN.com Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week versus Penn State following Iowa’s 21-10 win over the fourth-ranked Nittany Lions in Happy Valley.

Binns saw action in all 13 games as a redshirt freshman in 2008, recording 20 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and two pass break-ups. His career totals include 179 tackles, 13 sacks, 25.5 tackles for loss and 21 pass break-ups, four recovered fumbles and three caused fumbles.

Binns is a native of St. Paul, Minnesota, where he twice earned all-conference and all-state honors as a prep at Cretin-Derham High School.  He was a team captain and completed his prep career with 157 tackles.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Iowa in 2012. Binns was employed as a teacher and coach at Cretin-Derham prior to joining the Iowa staff, coaching football, basketball and track. He is pursuing his master’s degree in sports management.

Binns was born July 23, 1989.  He and his wife, Kailey, have a daughter, Brooklynn, and a son, Bo.
