NIL Basics

What is Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL)?

As of July 1, 2021, student-athletes competing in NCAA intercollegiate athletics are permitted to receive compensation for the use of their name, image or likeness (NIL) for commercial activities, including endorsements through traditional and social media, appearances, entrepreneurial activities, in-kind deals, autographs and more, and have the ability to retain an agent or attorney relating to this compensation in accordance with NCAA guidelines and Iowa Athletics’ NIL policies.

Do I need to provide 1099’s for the student-athletes?

Yes. Student-athletes will be considered contractual 1099 employees.

Can I use UI trademarks and logos for athlete NIL sponsorships?

No, you cannot utilize any photos and videos from the UI Athletics Department in paid partnerships without approval from the Trademark and Licensing Office. This includes content provided via INFLCR or gathered from any other outlet. You cannot make any alterations to photos and videos generated by the UI Athletics Department.

What is the Iowa Hawkeyes Marketplace?

The marketplace allows supporters to access student-athletes and offers NIL opportunities. The marketplace gives Iowa fans, brands, and sponsors the ability to browse, book, pitch and pay any Hawkeye student-athletes for NIL activities.

What types of NIL activities can I partner with Iowa athletes for?

There are many ways to partner with athletes such as appearances, autographs, endorsements, etc.

Contact Scott Brickman, Scott.Brickman@altiussp.com with any further questions.

How much should I pay an athlete for an NIL activity?

This is a decision between you/your business and the athlete.
