Students Interested in Trying Out for a University of Iowa Sports Team

Tryout candidates are not permitted to engage in any Supervised Athletic Activity including practice, strength & conditioning, or any other supervised skill assessment until the following items are completed.

Physical Examination

You are required to have a physical examination clearing you for participation within the last six (6) months before you can try out for a sports team at the University of Iowa.

The cost of having this physical will not be covered by the University.

Proof of Insurance

Provide a copy of each health insurance card (Medical, Prescription, Dental and/or Vision).
You must demonstrate proof of in-network insurance that covers sports-related injuries.

Proof of Sickle Cell Trait Testing

Effective August 1, 2022 per the recommendation of the NCAA, student-athletes in their initial season of eligibility and currently enrolled students no longer have the option to sign a waiver declining confirmation of sickle cell trait status.

Sickle Cell Trait status requirements can be met in the following ways:

  1. Newborn Screening Test Results: Contact your hospital of birth/pediatrician’s office and request a copy of your sickle cell trait status from your birth. Most states required newborn SCT testing beginning in 1990.
  2. Get tested: Provide a copy of a recent Sickle Cell Solubility Test indicating your Sickle Cell Trait status. This requires a written request from a physician, a blood draw from a physician’s office or lab, and a lab test with results indicated.
