Walk-On Tryouts
Started or planning to start at Iowa and missing playing a sport?
No rowing experience required. Open tryouts will begin each fall during the first week of classes for all full-time female students enrolled at the University of Iowa. For updates on our walk-on information meeting click the links below, fill out our questionnaire (link at bottom of page) or contact Coach McNicholas at Lowell-mcnicholas@uiowa.edu.
Tryouts begin the first week of classes after the informational sessions.
INFORMATIONAL SESSIONS:
TUESDAY, AUGUST 20 9:30-11 am
OR
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21, 6-7:30 pm
Iowa Memorial Union
125 Madison Street
What will coaches be evaluating?
• We will be looking at overall fitness, strength, flexibility, coordination, and coachability. Tryouts will consist of a combination of learning the rowing stroke (technical instruction on land and on the water), conditioning workouts (erging, running, stationary biking, HIIT circuits), and general athletic fitness evaluations. We are looking for fit and driven athletes who have the mindset and tools to become great rowers.
• During this process we will also determine who will become coxswains (the individuals who steer the shell and motivate the crew).
What do I need to complete before tryouts begin?
• Complete the medical tryout packet (link at bottom of page). Completed packets (including front/back picture of insurance card) can be returned via email to our team’s Athletic Trainer – Selena Carter (selena-carter@uiowa.edu) by Friday, August 23.
What if I can’t complete a physical before tryouts begin?
• Please contact Selena if you are not able to schedule a physical.
What can I do before our next meeting?
• Keep exercising! Getting in some cardio (could be some runs/jogs, swim or bike, or any of the machines at the CRWC) over the next few days before we officially kick things off will be helpful to get your engine into gear.
