The Iowa baseball team (3-6) defeated Stetson (12-6) at Melching Field at Conrad Park. Iowa jumped out to an early 9-0 lead after five innings and held on to defeat the Hatters, 9-7.
Aaron Reasland and Tim Gudex pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief to key the Hawkeyes to a victory. Reasland picked up his first win of the season after allowing four hits and two runs, one earned, in 1 2/3 innings. Gudex struck out two in three innings of one-hit relief to pick up his second save of the season.
Iowa opened the floodgates as they batted around and put up six runs in the third inning. The Hawkeyes had four hits to chase Stetson freshman Nathan Nery from the game. Jeff Gremley and Nate Yoho had RBI doubles in the inning.
Iowa added three runs in the fifth inning to build its lead to 9-0. The Hawkeyes led off the inning with four hits, including doubles by Yoho and Kevin Sunderman. L.J. Mims followed with his second hit, a two-run single up the middle to plate Andy Cox and Sunderman.
Redshirt freshman Ryan Dupic pitched four strong innings for the Hawkeyes before getting into trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning. The righthander allowed four earned runs on four hits with a strikeout before being replaced Reasland.
Stetson countered Iowa’s fifth inning with a five runs on four hits. The Hatters batted around and chased Dupic out of the contest. Dupic walked the first two batters of the inning before giving up back-to-back singles to Stetson’s eight and nine hitters. Hatter shortstop Brandon Paritz singled in two runs and scored a run in the inning to cut the Hawkeye lead to 9-5.
Stetson added one run in the sixth and seventh innings to close within two runs.
Iowa will travel to Bradenton, FL, tomorrow to face UMASS at the IMG Academy at 1:30 p.m. (CST)
