Hawkeyes Land Top Recruit From California

Nov. 15, 2004

IOWA CITY – Head Softball Coach Gayle Blevins has announced that Brittany Weil, the 2004 Orange County, CA Register Player of the Year, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Iowa. Weil joins Erin Riemersma, Quinn Morelock and Colleen McGlaughlin in Iowa’s recruiting class this fall.

Weil, a pitcher from Garden Grove, CA, was a first-team National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American in 2003 and was also an all-regional selection in 2003 and 2004. She has led her high school team to a pair of league championships and numerous divisional state titles. Weil has been named MVP in six tournaments, including the California Tournament of Champions in 2003.

Weil is also the starting pitcher for the ASA affiliated Gordon Panthers and has led the team to back-to-back seventh place finishes at the ASA National tournament. The Panthers won the ASA California state tournament in 2003 as well.

Prior to her high school career, Weil pitched for the USA Athletics U-12 team and led them to a first place finish at the ASA California state tournament in 2001. She also pitched for the USA Athletics U-14 team which placed first at the ASA California state tournament and fourth at the ASA National tournament.

“We could not be happier to have Brittany join the Hawkeye program,” Blevins said. “She is an outstanding pitcher with tremendous preparation for this level of competition. Brittany has been tested in numerous national championships and pressure situations. She will bring a special kind of maturity to the mound as a freshman. Brittany was highly recruited and we are thrilled that she chose Iowa. She will definitely be an impact player in our program.”

Weil chose Iowa over numerous schools, including six-time National Champion Arizona and Washington.
