IOWA CITY, IA –
The 49th-ranked Iowa women’s tennis team stomped Penn State, 6-1, Friday afternoon. The Hawkeyes improve to 11-7 overall, 5-2 in the Big Ten.
The Hawkeyes took all three doubles matches for the point. Hillary Mintz and Jacqueline Lee breezed by Andreea Niculescu and Katelyn BeVard, 8-2. At the No. 2 spot, Anastasia Zhukova and Hilary Tyler came back to win against Jenny Schular and Sasha Abraham, 8-6. Meg Racette and Milica Veselinovic held on to defeat Maaria Husain and Sarah Spence, 9-7.
In singles, Iowa took the top five matches. Mintz was the first off the court, blazing past Abraham, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 5 spot, Lee downed BeVard, 6-0, 6-3. Veselinovic defeated Niculescu, 6-2, 6-4. Zhukova battled Spence before finally winning, 6-3, 6-1. At the No. 1 spot, Racette traded games with Husain, winning 7-5, 6-2. Tyler played strong against Schular at the No. 6 position, but was unable to keep her at bay, falling 3-6, 6-4, 6-5 (11).
The Hawkeyes return to action Sunday when they host Indiana at 10 a.m. at Clark Racquet Center on the campus of Coe College in Cedar Rapids.
