CLARKSVILLE, TN – The University of Iowa baseball team finished the Austin Peay Tournament with a 3-0 record after defeating the Dayton Flyers, 6-3, Sunday afternoon in Clarksville, TN. The win gives Iowa its best start since 1995, when the Hawkeyes also started the year 3-0.

Like Friday’s win over Austin Peay, the Hawkeyes came from behind and scored five runs in the top of the ninth. Trailing 3-1, Skyler Moss started things off with a pinch-hit single, followed by Brian Burmester drawing a pinch-hit walk. Shortstop Jason White moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt, and Ryan Considine plated Moss with a sacrifice fly to center. Nate Price, Matt Wooldrik and Travis Sweet each picked up two-out RBI singles to give Iowa the lead. Two walks and a wild pitch loaded the bases for Moss, who drew a walk to give the Hawkeyes an insurance run.

Hawkeye closer Tim Gudex, who ended the eighth without throwing a pitch by picking off Joe McSoley, threw a hitless ninth to pick up his first win of the season.

Wooldrik led the offense, going 3-for-5 and picking up his second three-hit game of the season. Overall, the junior was 7-of-11 with four RBIs on the weekend.

Dayton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Michael Massa scored on a wild pitch from starter David Conroy. The sophomore hurler then settled down and allowed just two hits over four innings.

The Hawkeyes tied the game up in the top of the fourth when Sweet singled, then came around to score on a failed pick-off attempt. Dayton re-gained the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a run off Hawkeye reliever Chase Stephens, then added another run in the sixth by taking advantage of a pair of Hawkeye errors.

Iowa (3-0) will travel to Lafayette, LA, for the Louisiana Cajun Classic next weekend. The Hawkeyes will open with Northwestern State Friday at 2 p.m.
