IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa wrestling team was defeated by Penn State, 21-12 Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes fall to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in the Big Ten.
The match got off to an exciting start at 157 pounds where Joe Johnston rallied from an 8-0 deficit to defeat Nathan Galloway, 12-10. Johnston recorded a takedown with 1:02 remaining and followed with a three-point nearfall to win the match.
Eric Luedke made things even more exciting at 165 pounds, but was defeated by David Erwin, 4-3. Luedke had a chance to win the match with a takedown in the final seconds but time ran out before the takedown could be recorded.
The Nittany Lions followed with three straight wins over Ben Stedman (174), Paul Bradley (184) and Dan Erekson (197).
Ryan Fuller (Hwt.) broke Penn State’s winning streak with a 7-4 decision over Joel Edwards but the Nittany Lions responded quickly when Tim Haas pinned Lucas Magnani (125) 1:01 into the match.
Daniel Dennis took Jake Strayer to his back in the final seconds of the 133-pound match, but couldn’t record the fall and lost the match, 7-1. Alex Tsirtsis (141) and Ty Eustice (149) finished the match with wins, but couldn’t even the difference.
Iowa travels to East Lansing to face Michigan State Sunday at 12 p.m.
