BLOOMINGTON, IN – After day one of the 2006 Big Ten Championships, the University of Iowa wrestling team is in fourth place with 72.5 points. Minnesota is in the lead with 116.5 points.

Sophomore 174-pounder Mark Perry will be Iowa’s lone representative in the finals. Perry made quick work of his semifinal opponent, No. 6 Donny Reynolds of Illinois, pinning him in just 1:54. The two grapplers entered a wild scramble which ended in Perry stretching Reynolds out, locking in a cradle and getting his ninth fall of the season.

Perry will face top-seeded Jake Herbert (Northwestern) in the championship bout tomomrrow.

Alex Tsirtsis, Ty Eustice, Joe Johnston and Eric Luedke all lost their semifinal bouts.

Tsirtsis dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 2 seed Andy Simmons in the 141-pound semifinals and will face No. 8 Ed Gutnik (Wisconsin) in the consolation bracket tomorrow.

Eustice was upset by unseeded Troy Tirapelle 4-1 in the semis. He will battle third-seeded Eric Tannenbaum in the consolations.

Johnston was knocked into the consolation bracket by top-seeded Alex Tirapelle (Illinois) 4-2, while Luedke dropped a tight match to No. 1 Ryan Churella 2-0.

Lucas Magnani defeated Nathan Costello (OSU), 5-1 in consolation action and will face Northwestern’s No. 3 John Velez Sunday.

Freshman 197-pounder Dan Erekson advanced in the consolation bracket with a pair of wins. Erekson pinned No. 4 Brady Richardson (Indiana) in 4:09, then went on to defeat No. 8 Dallas Herbst (WI) 2-1 to assure himself a top-six finish.

Senior 184-pounder Paul Bradley lost his consolation match against No. 8 Tyler Todd. He will face Michigan State’s Joe Williams in the seventh place match tomorrow.

Daniel Dennis and Michael Bucklin went 0-2 and were eliminated from the tournament on the first day.

Session III will begin tomorrow at 11 a.m. (CDT).
