LAFAYETTE, LA — The University of Iowa baseball team defeated Evansville 6-4 Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Hawkeyes improve their season record to 5-1, while Evansville drops to 8-6.

The win coupled with Northwestern State’s 2-0 victory over Louisiana Lafayette Sunday afternoon gives the Hawkeyes the Louisiana-Lafayette Invitational championship. Both Iowa and Northwestern State finished the four-team tournament 2-1; Iowa won the tiebreaker due to its 2-0 triumph over Northwestern State on Friday. The Hawkeyes won the Austin Peay Tournament last weekend.

Junior Chase Stephens picked up his first win of the season, pitching the fifth through eighth innings. In four innings work, Stephens struck out five of 12 batters-faced and allowed only one hit. Senior Tim Gudex recorded his third save of the year, striking out two of three batters in the top of the ninth.

The Hawkeyes first run came in the bottom of the third when Ryan Considine scored on a Skyler Moss ground out. In the bottom of the seventh, Kevin Hoef scored on an error after a Ben Geelan single to left. Nate Price scored on a Travis Sweet bunt-single. Geelan scored when Dusty Napoleon singled and Sweet scored the next at-bat on a Wes Freie single to left. Napoleon scored the final Iowa run on a passed ball.

Sweet led the offense, going 3-4 at the plate, scoring once and recording an RBI.

The Hawkeyes return to action Friday, March 10, when they travel to the Texas-San Antonio tournament. Iowa will face the host Roadrunners in the first round at 3 p.m.
