SAN ANTONIO, TX – The University of Iowa baseball team posted nine runs in the top of the eighth to take a 15-9 win over the Southern Illinois Salukis Thursday afternoon. The win ups Iowa’s record to 7-6 on the year.
Travis Sweet was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Iowa offense. Matt Wooldrik (3) and Dusty Napoleon (2) also had multiple RBI games. Tim Gudex pitched an inning and a third of scoreless ball to get the win.
Trailing 8-6 late in the game, the Hawkeyes exploded in the eighth. With one out, Brian Burmester ripped a single through the right side that plated Sweet. A Skyler Moss single loaded the bases for Napoleon, who reached on a error by the second baseman that allowed Wes Freie to come home with the tying run. Wooldrik drew a walk that brought home the go-ahead run, and Jason White got a tough RBI by getting hit by a pitch. A wild pitch brought Moss home, then Sweet cleared the bases with a three-run double. Sweet and Freie traded places when the freshman hit a double of his own, giving Iowa the 15-8 lead.
Southern Illinois got a pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the ninth, but freshman Justin Toole finished out the game to give Iowa the win.
The Hawkeyes return to action tomorrow with their fourth game against Notre Dame in six days. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
