IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa baseball team lost to the Illinois State Redbirds, 7-3, Wednesday at Banks Field. Despite outhitting the Redbirds 7-5, Iowa fell to 10-8 on the year.
Junior Jason White and freshman Kevin Hoef each had a pair of hits for Iowa.
The Hawkeyes took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second using small ball. Dusty Napoleon reached on an infield single, then promptly stole second. The sophomore moved to third on a groundout from Jeff Engel, then scored on a groundout off the bat of Skyler Moss.
Illinois State tied things up in the top of the third with an RBI double from Ryan Anetsberger, then took the lead in the fourth when Jesse Griswold scored from second on a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield.
The Redbirds took a 6-1 lead in the top of the fifth, using two walks, three hit batsmen and a bases loaded double to post four runs.
The Hawkeyes threatened in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with one out, but a strikeout and groundout ended any potential rally.
After Illinois State added an insurance run in the top of the eighth, the Hawkeyes scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Hoef opened with a single, followed by a walk by Wes Freie. Hoef scored when Anetsberger muffed a potential double play ball, and Freie scored when pinch hitter Matt Wookdrik grounded into a double play.
Iowa was unable to complete the comeback in the ninth, and took the 7-3 loss.
The Hawkeyes return to action this weekend when they open the Big Ten season with a four-game series against Ohio State. First pitch Friday is set for 6 p.m.
