The University of Iowa baseball team ended its season Sunday with a 3-1 loss at Ray Fisher Stadium in Ann Arbor, MI. The Hawkeyes wrap up the year with a 23-33 record and a 12-20 mark in the conference.
The Hawkeyes out-hit the Wolverines 9-6 on the day, but Michigan managed to bunch four of them together in the bottom of the fifth and push across a trio of runs to give them the win.
Ben Geelan blasted a solo home run to give the Hawkeyes a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, but Michigan struck back the next inning to take the lead. Doug Pickens led off the fifth with a single, then moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Derek VanBuskirk single. VanBuskirk came around on a single from Mike Schmidt, and Schmidt scored on Leif Mahler.
The Hawkeyes threatened in the eighth by loading the bases with one out, but Wolverines reliever Michael Powers recorded a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.
Freshman Steve Turnbull took the loss for the Hawkeyes, allowing three runs in four and 1/3 innings pitched. Freshmen Justin Toole allowed one hit in one and 2/3 innings of work, while seniors Kevin Sunderman and Tim Gudex each pitched a hitless inning.
