Hawkeyes Remain Undefeated

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team defeated Toledo, 5-2, Sunday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.

The Hawkeyes secured the doubles point by sweeping Toledo in doubles competition. Juniors J.P. Ritchie and Bart van Monsjou teamed to defeat Curran and Rager, 8-2, in the No. 1 match. In the No. 2 spot, the team of sophomores Christian Bierich and Greg Holm defeated Miller and Moran, 8-6. In the final doubles match, freshmen Patrick Dwyer and Tommy McGeorge took down Ward and Clark, 8-6.

Iowa won four singles matches to secure the win over Toledo. In the No. 1 spot, van Monsjou defeated Miller, 6-0, 6-0. Bierich fell to Clark in the No. 2 match, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (12). In the No. 3 spot, Ritchie defeated Curran, 6-2, 6-3. McGeorge was defeated by Moran in the No. 4 match, 6-3, 6-4. Holm defeated Sonkin in the No. 5 match, 6-1, 7-6 (4). The Hawkeyes won the final singles match when Dwyer defeated Ward, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 6 spot.

“This match capped off a great weekend for us,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “We continue to improve and we will have to keep doing so because we have some challenging matches ahead of us.”

With this win, the Hawkeyes move to 4-0. They will return to action February 23 when they travel to Minneapolis, MN, to take on SMU. Competition is set to begin at 10 a.m.
