IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team was defeated by No. 58 Western Michigan, 4-3, Saturday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
Iowa was unable to secure the double’s point in the match. In the No. 1 match, juniors Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie defeated Norville and Birchmeier, 8-4. The sophomore team of Christian Bierich and Greg Holm fell to Crosby and Pelton, 8-2, in the No. 2 doubles match. In the final match of doubles competition, freshmen Tommy McGeorge and Patrick Dwyer were defeated by Bradshaw and Hayward, 8-3.
The Hawkeyes won three singles matches. In the No. 1 spot, van Monsjou took down Bradshaw, 6-0, 6-3. Bierich was defeated by Crosby, 6-4, 6-1, in the No. 2 match up. At the No. 3 position, Ritchie defeated Hayward, 6-2, 6-1. Holm fell to Birchmeier in the No. 4 match, 7-5, 6-1. In the No. 5 match, McGeorge was defeated by Pelton, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. In the final singles match, Dwyer defeated Norville, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
“We lost two 4-3 matches this weekend to ranked teams,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “This shows me that we can compete with some of the top teams in the country.”
With this loss, the Hawkeyes fall to 4-2. They will return to action February 28 when they host Drake. Competition will begin at 6 p.m. at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
