IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team was defeated by Drake, 4-3, Wednesday night at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
The Hawkeyes secured the doubles point by winning two doubles matches over Drake. In the No. 1 spot, juniors Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie defeated Zirkin and Pavic, 8-6. Iowa’s second doubles win came in the No. 2 match when sophomores Greg Holm and Christian Bierich took down Marsiglia and Setshogo, 8-4. The team of freshmen Patrick Dwyer and Reinoud Haal fell to Vila and Mendoza in the No. 3 match, 8-3.
Iowa secured two singles wins in competition against Drake. In the No. 1 match, van Monsjou defeated Zirkin, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Bierich fell to Vila in the No. 2 spot, 7-6, 6-4. In the No. 3 spot, Ritchie was defeated by Pavic, 6-4, 6-4. McGeorge was defeated by Marsiglia in the No. 4 match, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. The Hawkeyes won their second singles match when Haal defeated Mendoza, 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (9), in the No. 5 match. In the final singles match, Dwyer fell to Setshogo, 6-0, 6-3.
“This match makes the third 4-3 match we’ve lost in a row,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton, “but I’m confident that with this group we’ll be able to make it over the hump.”
With this loss, the Hawkeyes fall to 4-3. They will return to action March 2 when they travel to Minneapolis, MN, to take on Minnesota in their first Big Ten match this season. Competition is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
