FRESNO, CA – The University of Iowa baseball team fell to Fresno State, 4-2, Wednesday night in the opening game of the Pepsi Johnny Quick Classic in Fresno, CA. Iowa’s record falls to 3-4, while the Bulldogs are 10-11.
Once again, Iowa took a first-inning lead but was unable to hold it. With two outs in the opening frame, Wes Freie ripped a single up the middle to plate Travis Sweet and give the Hawkeyes a 1-0 advantage. Freie and Sweet each ended the night 1-of-4.
Fresno State took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second, getting an RBI groundout and a run-scoring bunt single. Iowa responded in the third, tying the game when Justin Toole brought home Tyson Blaser with an RBI single.
The game stayed tied until the bottom of the fourth, when Ryan Overland hit a solo home run to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead. Fresno State scratched across an insurance run in the seventh with a sacrifice squeeze.
Along with Toole, Sweet and Freie, Dusty Napoleon and Caleb Curry picked up hits for the Hawkeyes.
Sophomore Nick Erdman was solid on the hill for the Hawkeyes, scattering nine hits and four runs over six and one-third innings. Scott Brune and Mike Schurz threw a combined two innings of scoreless relief.
Iowa gets a day off tomorrow before returning to action with a pair of games Friday. The Hawkeyes will play Dallas Baptist at 4:05 p.m. and Fresno State at 6:05 p.m. Both times are Central.
