SANTA BARBARA, CA – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team competed in the first match of its Spring Break trip Wednesday afternoon. The Hawkeyes were able to break a three-match losing streak and defeat UC Santa Barbara, 5-2.
In doubles competition, the 28th-ranked team of juniors Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie moved to a perfect 8-0 this season by defeating Robertson and Dalskov, 8-4. Sophomores Christian Bierich and Greg Holm fell to Finkelstein and Barton, 8-3. The freshman team of Patrick Dwyer and Reinoud Haal was defeated by Hejazi and Taylor, 8-3.
The Hawkeyes clinched the victory with five wins in singles competition. In the No. 1 match, van Monsjou defeated Hejazi, 6-2, 6-3. Bierich fell to Dalskov in the No. 2 match, 4-6, 6-0, 10-6. Ritchie took down Finkelstein, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 3 match. In the No. 4 spot, Haal defeated Barton, 6-7, 6-0, 10-7. Freshman Tommy McGeorge defeated Robertson in the No. 5 match, 6-4, 6-2. In the final singles match, Holm defeated Taylor, 6-4, 6-1.
With this win, the Hawkeyes move to 5-3. They will continue their Spring Break trip by facing UC San Diego Friday and Dartmouth Saturday in San Diego, CA. Competition is set to begin at 1 p.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
