FRESNO, CA – The University of Iowa baseball team was defeated by the Dallas Baptist Patriots, 18-5, Saturday in the final game of the Pepsi Johnny Quick Classic in Fresno, CA. Iowa falls to 5-5 on the year.
The Hawkeyes fell into a 6-0 hole in the first inning and were never able to recover. Dallas Baptist’s fast start knocked Iowa starter David Conroy from the game in the top of the first. Travis Sweet got a run back in the bottom of the inning when he walked, went to second on a groundout, stole third and scored on an error.
The score remained 6-1 until the fourth, when the Patriots added another six runs.
Iowa responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth and a pair in the fifth, but Dallas Baptist got those three runs back in the top of the sixth.
Sophomore Justin Toole was 2-fo-2 on the day, while Caleb Curry was 1-of-2 with a pair of RBIs.
Conroy (0-2) took the loss for Iowa.
Iowa will open its home season next weekend with a four-game series against North Dakota State. Friday’s game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
