IOWA CITY – With the score tied 5-5 in the bottom of the 11th inning, University of Iowa senior shortstop Jason White stole home with two outs to give the Hawkeyes a thrilling 6-5 win over the North Dakota State Bison Friday night in game one of a scheduled doubleheader.
Iowa ups its record to 6-5, while North Dakota State falls to 2-10.
Caleb Curry was 2-of-4 with a double, a triple and three RBIs. Wes Freie was 2-of-4 with a double and a triple.
Hawkeye closer Mike Schurz allowed one hit over two innings to pick up his third win of the year. He struck out four.
The two teams traded runs in the second inning, but Iowa took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Curry ripped a two-run, two-out double, followed bay an RBI double off the bat of Justin Toole.
The Bison came back in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs to cut the lead to 4-3, then tied things up in the sixth. Iowa responded with a run in the seventh when White scored on a pair of errors, but the Hawkeyes were unable to keep the lead, as North Dakota State tied the game up in the top of the eighth.
The Hawkeyes had a golden opportunity to take a lead in the bottom of the eighth with bases loaded and one out, but the Bison were able to get out of the jam.
Both teams were held scoreless in the ninth, sending the game into extra innings.
