IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the North Dakota State Bison Saturday afternoon, 5 -3. The win improves the Hawkeyes to 8-5 and the loss drops the Bison to 2-12.
Hawkeye senior Scott Brune started out strong on the hill, not allowing a run to cross until the North Dakota State sixth inning, ending 15 1/3 scoreless innings for Iowa. Brune went 6 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking one. Mike Jacobs got the win for the Hawkeyes, throwing 1 2/3. Mike Schurz struck out two in the ninth inning for his second save of the season.
“Brune did a tremendous job today,” said Iowa Head Coach Jack Dahm. “He got in a couple situations but did quality work when we needed him.”
Leading the Iowa offense was Justin Toole, who went 2-3 with two runs. Travis Sweet and Dusty Napoleon each had an RBI.
Iowa loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and Caleb Curry scored on a Sweet grounder. Napolean doubled to right center driving in Toole, taking a 5-3 lead.
The Hawkeyes return to action tomorrow against North Dakota State beginning at 1 p.m.
