COLUMBUS, OH – The University of Iowa Hawkeyes fell to The Ohio State Buckeyes Friday night, 12-7, in the Big Ten season opener. The loss drops the Hawkeyes to 0-1 (10-6) and the win improves the Buckeyes to 1-0 (15-3).
The Hawkeyes had a five to four lead for a short time in the top of the sixth after Ben Geelan hit a bases clearing double. Geelan went 2-3 with 4 RBI. The Buckeyes responded with a seven-run sixth inning and never lost the lead. Iowa was unable to recover from five errors and the Buckeyes 15 hits.
Hawkeye starting pitcher Steve Turnbull threw five innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits. He struck out three and walked two. Andrew Porter gave up five runs on four hits.
Travis Sweet opened the Hawkeye ninth with a home run, his third of the season, making the score 12-7. Caleb Curry went 2-2 with one RBI. Justin Toole also had an RBI for Iowa.
“My biggest disappointment is the errors we made,” said Iowa Head Coach Jack Dahm. “From a defensive standpoint we just didn’t bounce back.”
The Hawkeyes return to action tomorrow against the Buckeyes for a double-header beginning at noon.
