IOWA CITY– The University of Iowa men’s tennis team was defeated by No. 63 Northwestern, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center. The Hawkeyes secured wins in one doubles match and two singles matches.
In doubles competition, juniors Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie teamed to defeat Sanborn and Dwyer, 9-8 (5), in the No. 1 match. In the No. 2 spot, sophomore Greg Holm paired with freshman Walker Grimes. The duo was defeated by Christian and Lock, 8-4. In the final doubles match, sophomore Christian Bierich and freshman Reinoud Haal fell to Tempke and Gomez, 8-6.
In the No. 1 singles match, van Monsjou was defeated by Tempke, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Ritchie fell to Lock, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 2 match. Bierich played in the No. 3 position and took down Dwyer, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. In the No. 4 spot, Haal was defeated by Christian, 6-4, 6-0. Freshman Tommy McGeorge grabbed a win for the Hawkeyes in the No. 5 spot as he defeated Gomez, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7. In the No. 6 singles match, freshman Patrick Dwyer was defeated by Sanborn, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
“We’re struggling with closing out individual matches and that’s costing us as a team,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton.
With this loss, the Hawkeyes fall to 7-11 overall and 0-8 in the Big Ten. They will conclude the regular season on the road April 21 against Purdue and April 22 against Illinois.
