WEST LAFAYETTE, IN — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team defeated Purdue, 5-2, Saturday in West Lafayette, IN. This win marks the end of an eight-match losing streak and Iowa’s first Big Ten win this season.
In doubles competition, the Hawkeyes won the No. 2 match. Freshman Walker Grimes teamed with sophomore Greg Holm to defeat Fuenmayor and Hodgman, 8-4. Iowa’s team of juniors Bart van Monsjou and J.P. Ritchie fell in the No.1 spot to Kuzmanovic and Rose, 8-5. In the No. 3 position, sophomore Christian Bierich and freshman Reinoud Haal fell to Foley and Nienberg, 8-6.
The Hawkeyes dominated singles competition against Purdue, losing only one match. In the No. 1 spot, van Monsjou defeated Kuzmanovic, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (9-7). Ritchie defeated Rose in the No. 2 match, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). In the No. 3 spot, Bierich defeated Hodgman, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Haal defeated Foley in the No. 4 match, 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Tommy McGeorge secured a win in the No. 5 spot over Warner, 6-4, 6-0. In Iowa’s only loss in singles against Purdue, freshman Patrick Dwyer fell to Nienberg, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
With this win, the Hawkeyes climb to 8-11 overall and 1-8 in the Big Ten. They will conclude the regular season Sunday against Illinois. Play will begin at noon in Urbana, IL.
