Box Score

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa Hawkeyes won game two in their weekend series with Penn State, 1-0, Saturday afternoon. The Hawkeyes improve to 12-9 (2-4 Big Ten) and the Nittany Lions fall to 8-16 (2-3 Big Ten). The second game of the doubleheader was called due to the weather.

Jason White scored the only Hawkeye run in the home half of the third. White walked to lead off the inning and would come around on a Penn State wild pitch.

The rest of the game played out as a pitchers dual, with Hawkeye starter Casey O’Rourke getting his second win of the year. O’Rourke went 4 2/3 innings, scattered five hits, struck-out five and allowed a walk. Mike Schurz pitched the final two innings for his fifth save, allowing one hit and striking out three. Craig Clark (1-3) pitched a complete game for Penn State, scattering four hits, allowing one run, striking out five but walking four.

It was O’Rourke’s first start since missing all of last season with testicular cancer.

“We are really proud of what Casey was able to do today,” Iowa Head Coach Jack Dahm said. “He hadn’t been stretched out yet this year, so we didn’t know what to expect out of him. He did everything we could have hoped for.”

Leading the Hawkeye offense was Travis Sweet who was 2-2 on the day. Wes Freie and Caleb Curry recorded the other two hits for the Hawkeyes.

The Hawkeyes and Nittany Lions will finish the series with a seven inning game on Sunday, with first pitch slated for 11:30 a.m.
