IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa baseball team won their ninth-straight game with a 16-5 win over Upper Iowa Wednesday. Iowa ups its record to 24-15, while Upper Iowa goes to 28-18.
“Our guys are doing a good job and moving the baseball,” said Head Coach Jack Dahm. “Baseball is a game of momentum, and we have been doing a good job of getting and keeping the momentum.”
The Peacocks got on the board first, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first with a pair of RBI singles.
Iowa cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, then put up seven runs in the bottom of the second. The Hawkeyes got an RBI single from Wes Freie, two bases-loaded walks, a three-run triple from T.J. Cataldo and a run-scoring fielder’s choice.
Upper Iowa responded with a run in the third on an RBI double from Jamie Terres, but Iowa came back with a trio of runs in the bottom of the inning. Jason White and Travis Sweet each singled home a run, while Cataldo doubled home a run but was thrown out trying to stretch it into his second triple of the day.
Back-to-back Peacock RBIs cut the lead to 11-5 in the top of the fourth, but once again the Hawkeyes immediately responded with a five spot in the bottom of the frame. White ripped a two-run single up the middle, Sweet followed with an RBI single and Cataldo delivered a sacrifice fly. Freie brought home the innings fifth run after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Sweet ended the game 3-for-3 with three RBIs, while Cataldo was 2-of-4 with a career-high five RBIs. Justin Toole and Kyle Riffel each picked up three hits while Freie was 2-for-3 with a pair or RBIs.
