COLUMBUS, Ohio — The third-seeded University of Iowa field hockey advanced to its second Big Ten Tournament championship game in as many years, by avenging one of its three losses this season. The Hawkeyes defeated second-seeded Michigan State in overtime, 3-2. Iowa was defeated by Michigan State last week, 1-0, in Iowa City. The sixth-ranked Hawkeyes improve their record to 16-3 overall.
“We did a really good job of executing and sticking to the game plan,” Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum said. “We had to make changes as we went along, but, we made the changes and did a good job of adjusting.”
Junior Caroline Blaum scored two goals while senior Adrienne Dybus recorded the other Hawkeye goal. They are the seventh and eighth Iowa players to record goals in the 2007 Big Ten Tournament.
In the eighth minute, the Hawkeyes were awarded their first penalty corner. Blaum took the pass from junior Lauren Pfeiffer to score the first goal of the game.
Michigan State tied the game during the 29th minute, when Gwen Riley slipped the ball past Hawkeye goalkeeper Lissa Munley.
In the 52nd minute, Michigan State’s Amy Schneider broke the tie, converting on a shot from the top-right side of the circle.
Senior Adrienne Dybus tied the score in the 54th minute, after the Spartan goalkeeper came out of the cage and missed the ball, allowing Dybus to put the ball into the cage unscathed.
Iowa was awarded a penalty corner in the 62nd minute. Pfeiffer blasted a shot past the Michigan State defense and put it into the goal, but the shot was ruled too high, therefore not counting as a goal.
With three minutes remaining, the Spartans were awarded two consecutive penalty corners, but the Hawkeye defense stepped-up and stopped both Michigan State shots.
Blaum recorded the game winner, her second of the game, in the 72nd minute on a fast-break in overtime. After receiving the assist from Pfeiffer, she slapped the shot from the center of the circle past the Michigan State goalkeeper.
“Everyone stepped up and executed very well,” Griesbaum said. “We did a really good job of staying in the moment and not looking ahead.”
The Hawkeyes will face top-seeded Michigan, in the championship game, Sunday, Nov. 4, at noon (CT) in Columbus, OH. The game will be televised on a tape-delay by CSTV.
The Wolverines defeated Iowa in double overtime, 3-1, Sept. 21, in Ann Arbor, MI. Last season in the championship game, the Hawkeyes defeated Penn State, 2-1.
