Ann Arbor, MI –The University of Iowa volleyball team was swept at Michigan Monday night, 3-0. The Hawkeyes fall to 9-16 overall and 1-13 in Big Ten play.
Junior Catherine Smale led the Hawkeyes with 11 kills while sophomore Megan Schipper added eight. Freshman Katie Kennedy chipped in three block assists.
Michigan stormed out to an early 7-2 lead in game one, forcing a Hawkeye timeout. The Wolverines stretched their advantage to 20-12 before a 5-1 Hawkeye run made the score 21-17, forcing a Michigan timeout. The Wolverines responded after the break, using a 9-2 surge for the win.
The Wolverines once again used a strong start for the win in game two, jumping out to a 7-1 lead that forced the Hawkeyes to take a timeout. Michigan then used a 9-3 run to take an 18-6 advantage. Three-straight Wolverine points forced another Iowa timeout with a 22-9 score. Michigan then held on for a 30-16 victory.
Game three started close and Iowa took its first lead of the match off a Smale kill at 5-4. Michigan quickly responded with a 6-2 run to re-gain the lead at 12-7. The Hawkeyes fought back to within one point at 12-11, using three Michigan errors and a Kiley Fister kill for a 4-0 run. The Wolverines then used their own 7-1 run for a 19-12 score. A 5-1 Iowa run brought the Hawkeyes within three at 20-17, but a 10-6 Michigan surge to end the game gave them the match win.

The Hawkeyes return to action Friday when they face Purdue. Match time in West Lafayette, IN, is scheduled for 6 p.m. central time.
